One of the first thoughts that anyone has when preparing for a ball is, of course, what to wear? The right outfit can have a big impact on how guests experience the evening. We have summarised the most important points relating the dress code at the HOFBURG Silvesterball, to help answer a very important question:
What is the correct attire for the HOFBURG Silvesterball?
In addition to various rules governing etiquette, dress codes are in place for all of the balls hosted at the HOFBURG Vienna. These uniquely Viennese traditions form an inseparable part of the balls held at the venue, just as the midnight countdown is an essential component of New Year’s Eve.
All evening gowns must be floor length. The seam must reach as far as the ankles, including when wearing high heels. As far as the colour of the gown is concerned, the choice is yours – but please note that white is traditionally the preserve of the debutantes.
Shorter dresses with frills or gowns with an asymmetric cut – i.e. long at the front and short at the back – do not comply with the dress code. If you choose a dress with a slit, please ensure that the slit is a modest height. While you may wear gloves, they are not mandatory.
Tuxedos, dark suits and tails are not only permitted; they are obligatory. However, the jackets must be classic black – not coloured or patterned – and worn with black dress shoes and white dress shirt. Please note that only bow ties are permitted. Neckties and cravats are not part of the dress code. Gala uniforms and appropriate national dress are permitted.
To help illustrate these points more closely we have summarised some of the main aspects of the dress code in a video for you:
