Hofburg Silvesterball 2015
On 31 December 2015 the staterooms of the Hofburg Vienna were transformed into the opulent backdrop for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve celebration. “The atmosphere, design and theme for the evening come together to create an incredible production that marks the official start of the Viennese Ball season,” explained Christof Cremer, who devised the stunning spectacle for this year's Hofburg Silvesterball. Guests enjoyed a sophisticated atmosphere inspired by the 1920s and 1930s in a programme dubbed “magic moments”. The theme for the evening was also brought to life in various classic compositions from the worlds of operetta and musical theatre. This year’s music programme was put together by Herbert Fischerauer. After a memorable gala dinner by Gerstner Catering, ball guests listened to world-class orchestras play melodies from waltzes to rhythmic jazz.
A memorable mix of well-loved melodies
The official opening of the grand staircase at the beginning of the ball got the evening off to a glittering start. Stars from the worlds of opera and musical theatre led the opening ceremony and the midnight show. Sopranos Anita Götz and Maya Hakvoort, mezzo-soprano Juliette Mars and tenors Paul Schweinester and Boris Eder treated guests to memorable performances of various uplifting operetta, musical and pop melodies. The Vienna State Opera Ballet ensemble and soloists Alice Firenze and Davide Dato gave a ballet performance which was choreographed by Luka Gaudernak. In keeping with ball tradition, the debutantes from the Elmayer dance school presented Carl Michael Ziehrer’s Fan Polonaise and danced Robert Stolz’s Gruss aus Wien, as well as Gold und Silber by Franz Lehar.
Assembled in the staterooms, the guests counted down to midnight together and were showered in twinkling silver confetti from a confetti cannon. Afterwards the distinctive sounds of the Blue Danube Waltz got the New Year off to a swinging start. Further highlights followed during the midnight show: Maya Hakvoort performed the jazz classic I Got Rhythm by George Gershwin, Paul Schweinester sang Heute Nacht oder nie from The Song of the Night alongside Anita Götz, and Juliette Mars gave a rendition of the Edith Piaff hit La Vie en Rose. The ball guests danced until the early hours, joining in the public quadrille led by Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer and packing the dance floor in the disco.
Rendezvous to the beat of the waltz
The guests, who came from Austria and numerous different countries worldwide, were joined at the Hofburg Vienna by various famous faces from the worlds of business and culture. Opera star Kurt Rydl was among this year’s VIPs, as was Peter Simonitschek whose opera arrangement was a highlight of the Hofburg Silvesterball. “The Hofburg Silvesterball was a very special New Year’s Eve highlight once again this year, thanks in no small part to the formal opening ceremony led by our debutantes in the staterooms and the ever popular public quadrille,” confirmed Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer.
Experiencing magic moments
“A New Year’s Eve with a programme this varied is unique in the whole of Vienna,” said Hofburg Vienna Managing Director Alexandra Kaszay. In addition to the opening shows and dance numbers, guests were treated to numerous other programme highlights away from the dancefloors. This year the culinary repertoire included a traditional ice cream parlour and a quintessentially Viennese sausage stand which provided late-night sustenance. Creativity was also the order of the day with New Year’s doughnuts available for ballgoers to decorate. Revellers also had the chance to hang their New Year’s resolutions on the wish tree and pluck four-leafed clovers for luck. There were digital photo greetings to provide a memento of the evening, as well as a specially commissioned Silvesterball champagne flute. The ladies were given perfume from Guerlain, while the gentlemen received luxury pralines from Xocolat to take home.In addition to numerous musical highlights and performances, the other touching moments for guests included a marriage proposal involving a lovely couple from Manchester. Gathering up all his courage, Jamie took to the stage in the Festsaal to ask Victoria for her hand in marriage.
“The proposal was arranged a long time ago and we helped him to plan this special moment. Witnessing it first hand was just magical. We get to know the guests personally when taking their reservations and it is lovely to meet them in person when they come to collect their tickets on the night of the ball,” explained organiser Jennifer Alfons.
